DOVER SECURES ASCS MIDWEST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

Inside Line Promotions – EAGLE, Neb. (Sept. 12) – For the second time in his short but storied career, Jack Dover has claimed the ASCS Midwest Region championship. Only this time he wasn’t even gunning for it.

“It’s pretty cool to win that deal, especially because we weren’t focused on it,” he said.

The 21-year-old Springfield, Neb., resident also won the title in 2008 and he has finished no worse than seventh in the standings for the past six years. With a 463-point advantage heading into this weekend’s doubleheader finale at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., Dover can also record the biggest margin of victory in the region’s history. It currently stands at 305 points, which Eric Lutz won by last year.

“Our goal this year wasn’t to win a championship, it was to win a lot of races,” Dover said. “We’ve been fortunate enough to get nine wins so far and I know we’re not done. So to win the ASCS Midwest Region championship is a great bonus.”

Dover wrapped up the title last Saturday at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb. However, his night was anything but easy.

“I started third in my heat race, but the car didn’t take off on the start so I got passed by two cars,” he said. “That put us fourth row outside in the B Main. I worked on the engine a little bit and changed the setup.”

Dover then rallied to finish fifth in the B Main and earn a transfer to the main event, where he started 19th.

“Jason Johnson helped me out a little,” he said. “He was watching me and told me to switch my gears, which was good advice. Then I tightened the car up a little bit.”

The additional changes proved advantageous for the 25-lap feature as Dover charged to finish 12th.

On Sunday, he competed in the $5,000-to-win Nebraska Cup at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb. With four weekly victories and an ASCS National Tour win at the high-banked, 1/3-mile track in June, Dover was looking forward to the big race at his home track.

“The confidence was really high,” he said. “With it being my home track and we always do good there, I was going in there expecting to win or at least be top two.”

Dover started the winning from his heat race, when he led all but the first lap to earn one of the eight positions in the redraw. However, he pulled the No. 6 in the random draw to determine the first four rows of the feature.

Despite starting sixth, Dover was up to third on the first lap. Around lap 10, he made a move to get around another driver for the runner-up position.

“I went right in the middle and when I did that I spun my tires trying to get by him,” Dover said. “It killed my right rear tire.”

Dover was able to maintain his position for several more laps before he dropped to fourth, which is where he finished.

“There was nothing on the right side as far as traction,” he said. “It was just spinning the whole time.

“I guess I can’t complain with a top five against the guys who were there. We’ll try against next weekend at I-80 Speedway.”
